Willett Engineering Portfolio: Project Spotlight

Freeman’s Mill Park: Gwinnett County, Lawrenceville, GA

Freeman's Mill Park will open to the public on Saturday, May 8, 2010.  This typical rural gristmill was built between 1868 and 1879 and it continued to operate through the 20th Century.  In the late 1990’s the mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in architecture, engineering, industry and social history.

In 2009 Willett Engineering was involved in the historic restoration of the mill as the centerpiece for a planned park.  The original mill structure was concrete-stabilized rubble rock piers and walls and wood framed floors and walls of 2-1/2 stories with a total area of 3,300 square feet.  Renovation of the mill included the design of each pier extension and a new retaining wall to raise the mill 5-feet vertically out of the peak flood height of the adjacent Alcovy River.
